Slavery has left a deep, lasting imprint on the Western psyche: a scar that the New Atheists emphatically employed in their attempts to discredit Christianity by discussing biblical texts addressing slavery. Most important among these are codes regulating slavery in the Torah. Several apologists and intellectuals have addressed this topic, either in written or oral form, often spotlighting errors made by critics of Christianity in exegeting these texts. But the New Atheists' case ultimately concentrates on the existence of slavery in the Bible, not on the details concerning slavery. Limiting answers to New Atheists from errors made in their exegeses proves to be an insufficient method for answering questions pertaining to the existence of those codes. It is time to propose a new strategy. The New Atheists' case rests not only on the actual existence of slave codes, but on the assumption that if God is good, then His only viable response to slavery must be abolition. This paper presents a counterargument, which is termed the Matthew 19 defense, proposing that God may instead have good reason(s) for regulating, rather than abolishing, slavery. The approach to this task begins with the semantic task of defining slavery and by placing Old Testament slavery within its proper cultural context. Secondly, the New Atheists' assertions and arguments are established, followed by a discussion of the metaethical divide between Christianity and naturalism. The Matthew 19 defense is inspired by Plantinga's Free Will Defense; working from Matthew 19:8 it asserts that God might have allowed social evils such as slavery because Israel often lacked the necessary virtues for the existence of a free society. Finally, inasmuch as the framework for this project involves a Christian perspective, it is essential to demonstrate that this defense is consistent with a Christian worldview, thereby demonstrating that the Matthew 19 defense conforms to the reasonable requirements for a resolution of these issues.
