There is something insidious robbing the joys of life and sometimes even life itself from people in our churches and communities. Often mistaken as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) because it shares many of the same symptoms, its cause is dramatically different. To make matters more complicated, an individual with this condition often has PTSD as well due to the circumstances they have experienced. This condition caused by sin, perceived or committed, is called moral injury. While this condition is known to mental health providers and mostly military chaplains, it is relatively unknown among pastors of local congregations. The author has learned through conversations with pastors from across the United States that very few of them have any idea what moral injury is, let alone how to respond to it. It is impossible for the pastor or ministry leader to counsel and assist someone when they do not understand what the person is struggling against. It is time to give pastors the tools to fight the battle against moral injury and help the individuals to be victorious in their lives of faith. This dissertation will utilize an informational training to assist local church congregational pastors and ministry leaders to come to an understanding of and develop a pastoral response to moral injury.
