As the consensus of Pentecostal scholars have argued over the past three decades, the most distinctive element of Pentecostal worship is the affective experience of the Holy Spirit in the worship service. Therefore, Pentecostal worship should be deemed efficacious if it includes unmediated experience of the Spirit. The most well-known Pentecostal scholar in the field of liturgical theology, Simon Chan, brings a robust Pentecostal pneumatology to bear upon his spiritual theology, however this influence does not extend into his liturgical theology. I have sought to correct this lack of congruence by building a Pentecostal liturgical theology on the centrality of pneumatic experience in worship, supported by the prevailing view of selected Pentecostal theologians (such as Steven Felix-Jager, Wolfgang Vondey, and Amos Yong) and by utilizing the apostle Paul's writings in 1 Corinthians 12-14 (which, of course, pre-date any post-Nicene liturgical formulations). Thus, using the tools of liturgical theology, I have argued that the very act of worship defines Pentecostal theology for the worshiping church through their experience of the Spirit, which also greatly determines their embodied anthropology, charismatic ecclesiology, and holistic missiology. In sum, the essence of Pentecostal liturgical theology is an encounter with the living God by the Spirit. It is a living theology that results in S/spirited doxology and a living doxology that results in S/spirited theology.
