This dissertation demonstrates that Seward Hiltner's liberal presuppositions on God, Scripture, man, sin, psychology, and pastoral care exerted a formative influence on the process of adopting Paul Tillich's correlation method, and consequently his correlation method led to the formulation of a psychologized pastoral theology. For this research, the author first investigated Hiltner's correlational method, which served as an epistemological framework for systematizing Hiltner's operation-centered pastoral theology. Second, the author analyzed Hiltner's theological presuppositions and claims that led him to employ the correlational method. Finally, the author critically evaluated the problem of presuppositional incompatibility in the correlational method and the psychologization of theology in the integration of theology and psychology.
