Poverty has been a subject of intense global debate, with countless efforts to eradicate it. Unfortunately, poverty remains a persistent issue. This study explored the complex journey from poverty to executive leadership, a gap in current scholarly research. While some children raised in affluence may not rise to executive positions, some children raised in poverty overcome poverty's limitations to attain executive leadership. This qualitative phenomenological research explored the lived experiences and perceptions of select executive leaders who were associated with Back to the Bible Truth Evangelistic Mission (BBT), Africa Renewal Ministries (ARM), or Vision for Africa International (VAI), who served in executive leadership in diverse organizations in Central Uganda, and who rose through poverty to executive leadership. The study identified dominant themes and influences expressed by the 30 respondents during the semi structured interviews. The study found that African leaders in Central Uganda who rose from poverty to executive positions had unique early experiences including resilience, positive parenting, reliance on God, and dreams. Poverty also had negative impacts such as missed opportunities and emotional stress. However, the rise through poverty also offered hidden benefits like divine attribution and social capital. Additionally, nonpoverty factors, like character and education, played a significant role in the success of the leaders examined. These insights could enrich the theoretical knowledge on how individuals rise through the poverty ceiling to executive leadership in a Ugandan context. In addition, the study findings are poised to inform future research, policy development, professional practice, leadership development, and community action.
