The purpose of this dissertation is to prove that the human dignity argument President Lincoln made against slavery, if adopted today, would constitute a compelling ethical case against the legality and practice of abortion. Lincoln used natural law, based off of the text in the Declaration of Independence, as his chief argument against slavery. The three rights given to all men by their Creator are "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness," or what the Constitution phrases as "life, liberty, and property." The way Lincoln argued made it obvious that he believed the three rights were logically sequential and that inverting them would create a human dignity crisis. He never argued that slaveholders did not have the right to own property. Rather, he argued that slaveholders did not have the right to own property at the expense of someone else's liberty. Therefore, the pro-life community could benefit from a similar argument. No one argues that a woman does not have liberty over her body, but she cannot place that liberty above the right of another human being's right to life. Whenever the triad of life, liberty, and property is taken out of order, immense human dignity abuses will follow.
