This study examines the meaning of the "chair of Moses" saying (Matthew 23:2-3) through its past applications-an approach related to what is sometimes called "Wirkungsgeschichte" and "reception history." After developing a distinctively Christian, theocentric method for evaluating past applications (ch. 2), this study examines several past applications grouped around "concerns." Each of the central chapters juxtaposes diverse applications of the saying, evaluates them, and seeks to appropriate them for better understanding of the saying.Among ecclesial concerns, key texts examined are Tertullian's On Monogamy or De monogamia, Origen's Commentary on Matthew, the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies, Augustine's Teaching Christianity or De doctrina christiana, and the Incomplete Commentary on Matthew or Opus imperfectum in Matthaeum (ch. 3). Among salvation-historical concerns, key texts examined are Irenaeus's Against Heresies or Adversus Haereses, Hilary's Commentary on Matthew, Augustine's Against Faustus the Manichee or Contra Faustum Manichaeum, Eusebius's Commentary on the Psalms, John Maldonatus's Commentary on the Holy Gospels, David Pareus's In S. Matthaei Evangelium Commentarius (ch. 4). Among civil and political concerns, key texts examined are Theodore Beza's Jesu Christi Domini nostri Novum Testamentum, sive Novum Foedus, Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan, Hugo Grotius's Annotationes in Novum Testamentum, John Lightfoot's Hebrew and Talmudical Exercitations or Horae Hebraicae et Talmudicae (ch. 5). And among source- and redaction-critical concerns, key texts examined are Julius Wellhausen's Das Evangelium Matthaei, Die Botschaft Gottes, Emanuel Hirsch's Die Vorlagen des Lukas und das Sondergut des Matthaus, Ernst Haenchen's "Matthaus 23," Walter Grundmann's Das Evangelium nach Matthaus, and Ernst Lohmeyer's Das Evangelium des Matthaus (ch. 6).This study aims to cultivate a humbling sensitivity to providential history for ongoing application of the saying in Christian communities. This study makes two major advances. First, this study reconceptualizes Wirkungsgeschichte or reception history within a providentialist view of history that both respects the diversity of applications of a scriptural text and maintains the special status of the Scriptures in Christian theology (ch. 2). Second, it articulates a distinctive understanding of the "chair of Moses" saying that selectively appropriates past applications and maintains the saying's integrity within the narrative of the Gospel according to Matthew (ch. 7).
