The missional church conversation in the last few decades has highlighted the missional nature of the church and the need for it to discern and participate with the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit among others in local contexts beyond church services, events, programs and buildings. However, there remains a lack of support for the formation of pentecostal/charismatic emerging adults for missional living. This lack of support has been perpetuated by an ecclesiology in the United States that has been bifurcated from mission and co-opted by modernity; a pentecostal/charismatic theory and practice of mission that, in some ways, neglects its very pentecostal/charismatic identity and values; understandings and practices of education and formation that promote passive receptivity and surface learning rather than transformation and active participation; and the hiddenness of the formational needs of emerging adults. The purpose of this study was to discover the process of formation for missional living. Twenty-six semi-structured interviews with thirteen emerging adults in North America who self-identified as pentecostal/charismatic and living missionally were conducted in order to discover what, from their perspective, contributes to, or impedes, formation for missional living. Discovering this provides faith communities with the opportunity to better understand, respond to, and grow in support of emerging adults who desire to live missionally. The findings of this study have added to the literature on missional living, pentecostal missiology, and emerging adult formation by developing a theory of the missional formation process-identifying the key components of missional living and their relationships to one another, including the core phenomenon of formation for missional living. The data and analysis served to generate the theory that missional living is largely the fruit of integrating everyday living and Holy Spirit awareness. The rich description of the missional formation process offered in this project provides faith communities with the opportunity to be better equipped to respond, not to the question, "How do we get emerging adults back into the church?" but "How can we best support emerging adults to discern and participate in what the Holy Spirit is doing in the world?".
