This dissertation provides an understanding of how Martyn Lloyd-Jones preached his evangelistic sermons. The study consists of two hundred analyzed sermons from the roughly 650 evangelistic sermons from Lloyd-Jones available in print or audio. The study analyzed not only what evangelistic elements were present in the sermons but also how those elements were discerned.Chapter 1 serves as the introduction to the dissertation. In this chapter, the research problem and question, thesis, and importance and uniqueness of the topic are discussed. This chapter also provides a literature review concerning the evangelistic preaching of Lloyd-Jones.Chapter 2 serves as a biographical and historical introduction to-and overview of-Lloyd-Jones' life and ministry. In an effort to systematically work toward the analysis of his evangelistic sermons, each aspect of his life and ministry is discussed in relation to his evangelistic preaching. To that end, his home life and upbringing in Wales is discussed, for it is impossible to understand Lloyd-Jones as a preacher divorced from his Welsh heritage. Additionally, his medical training and conversion play a pivotal role in his evangelistic preaching and so these are discussed as well. His two pulpit ministries in South Wales and London are covered as the two main theaters of his evangelistic preaching throughout his four decades of vocational ministry. Finally, the major influences on Lloyd-Jones as an evangelistic preacher are discussed. The histories of men such as George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Daniel Rowland, and Howell Harris are examined briefly in an effort to show that Lloyd-Jones was, in many ways, a product of the Calvinistic revivals of the eighteenth century.Chapter 3 focuses on the preaching of Lloyd-Jones. His understanding of the primacy of preaching as well as his theology and methodology of preaching are covered. Lloyd-Jones' belief that every preacher should preach three types of sermons is also discussed in this chapter. The explanation of his three types of sermons ends with a look at his views on evangelistic preaching, which serves as a segue to an in-depth analysis of his evangelistic sermons in chapter 4. Chapter 4 is the most important chapter of the dissertation. In this chapter, an attempt is made to show how Lloyd-Jones preached evangelistic sermons. Lloyd-Jones' own definition of evangelistic preaching is used as a grid to put each sermon through. One other grid is used in order to understand how Lloyd-Jones preached evangelistically. The Reformed tradition of the Three Rs-namely, "Ruin, Redemption, and Regeneration" is the other grid used in this dissertation. The lesser grid of the Three Rs is laid over the top, as it were, of Lloyd-Jones' own "God, Law, Gospel" grid to see if these themes are indeed present within his evangelistic preaching and to what degree. For the sake of simplicity, the elements of Gospel and Redemption from the respective grids have been combined into one, because they represent the same idea of redemption through Christ. The elements analyzed for the study, then, are God, Law, Ruin, Gospel, and Regeneration. A second part of the analysis determines how Lloyd-Jones discerned these evangelistic elements if they were indeed present in a given sermon. The sermons analyzed for this dissertation were a set of two hundred randomly selected sermons. Only sermons preached in the context of the local church were selected. This dissertation focuses on evangelistic preaching to the regular gathering of God's people on a Sunday. Additionally, only evangelistic sermons were analyzed. Chapter 5 offers a summary of the findings. In addition, implications for understanding Lloyd-Jones as a preacher as well as implications for preachers today are offered. Finally, needs for further research are discussed. This dissertation also includes an appendix which is a table of all two hundred sermons analyzed as well as the sermon title, year the sermon was preached, and a detailed, visual representation of whether or not the evangelistic elements of Lloyd-Jones' evangelistic paradigm were present in the sermon.
