Jerome's Vulgate translation of the Book of Judith differs markedly from its Septuagintal counterpart in length, style, emphases, and characterizations. Jerome claims in his preface that he worked from Aramaic sources and that his Latin reflects only what he found intelligible in them. However, no textual records of these sources have emerged, and there is no denying that Jerome also relied on the VL for his translation. Many modern scholars argue that pluses in Vulgate Judith come from Jerome's reworking of the text around Christian ideals. Still, others defend the plausibility of his prefatory account. This investigation analyzes the pluses of Vulgate Judith through the eyes of a Jewish reader in Judea at the turn of the first century BCE. What emerges are recurrent, indirect allusions to the Exodus from Egypt, the foundational story of the Jewish people. These echoes, coupled with other findings that are not consonant with a Hieronymian reworking, lend support to the scholarly argument that pluses in Vulgate Judith do not originate with Jerome but with the Aramaic sources he claims to have used.
