This dissertation presents Augustine's account of sacrifice as Christological, a Christology which is refracted in four key ways across sacrifice considered as praise, justice, atonement, and the Eucharist. I argue this claim in two ways: firstly, a careful examination of Augustine's account of sacrifice particularly in his four major works: Confessions, Enarrationes in Psalmos, De Civitate Dei, and De Trinitate, and secondly, a display of the Christological lens which undergirds his theology of sacrifice. In the Confessions, Augustine speaks of sacrifice as praise and contrasts the sacrifice of Christians-that of humility wherein one dies to self-to the pride of the Manicheans who refuse to "slay their own prideful boasts." This emphasis on a sacrifice of praise is likewise evident throughout Augustine's work Enarrationes in Psalmos. The final two works (De Civitate Dei and De Trinitate) capture two central features of sacrifice for Augustine, namely, justice and penance through Christ's Passion and death. Augustine's account of sacrifice reaches its culmination in De Civitate Dei, in which the various accounts of sacrifice coalesce in the Eucharist.I conclude my dissertation on Augustine's account of Eucharistic sacrifice, the source and summit of Christian life. I divide my examination of Augustine's account into three parts: the Eucharist as nourishment, the Eucharist as an ascent through humility, and the Eucharist as an ascent of justice. By receiving the Eucharist, Augustine holds, the faithful are transformed into Christ becoming one with Him in ecclesial unity. The Eucharist is thus that most perfect sacrifice, an act of true justice which allows one to participate in holy fellowship.
