This qualitative research examined the perspectives of African Assemblies of God church leaders concerning the characteristics they desire to see in their missionary partners. Best practice in missionary formation recognizes the importance of considering stakeholder opinions when constructing a missionary profile. However, the Africa Region of the Assemblies of God Africa World Missions has not completed this, resulting in a potentially incomplete missionary profile. This research explored the perspectives of African Assemblies of God church leaders on the qualities they value in a missionary partner for service in the African context by asking the question: "What are the perspectives of African Assemblies of God church leaders concerning the characteristics they desire in a missionary partner for service in the African context, and how can these be given due consideration alongside foundational scriptural principles and established best practices from the literature?"The research progressed in three phases. Phase one examined the theological literature concerning the lives of Jesus and Paul to determine what characteristics a missionary should possess for cross-cultural service. Phase two examined the sociological literature to determine the types of characteristics needed to serve cross-culturally in the African context. In phase three, using Stakeholder Theory to create a qualitative thick description of the characteristics African church leaders desire to see in their missionary partners, the researcher conducted field research using focus group and semi-structured interviews to explore the perspectives of African Assemblies of God church leaders on the qualities they desire to see in their missionary partners. The findings from the field research fall under six major categories. The study examined these findings by considering the first two phases of the research to draw conclusions and make recommendations for developing an integrated missionary profile that gives due consideration to African leaders' perspectives and best practice principles from the literature. The significance of this study is to develop a framework through which the Assemblies of God World Missions Africa training team can improve its missionary training program by establishing a missionary profile that reflects the perspectives of African church leaders. Additionally, this study can help establish a process for the Africa Region to create a feedback loop with its national church partners regarding the characteristics they desire in their missionary partners.
