This dissertation seeks to answer one question: What is the theological result of the fourfold Gospel collection of the second century church? The goal of answering such a question extends on the commonly held views of the purpose of the fourfold collection: to comprehensively collect the canonical Gospels yet exclude the apocryphal counterparts. Thus, the theological result advanced here is connected to the Jesus kerygma, or a central gospel message-Jesus is the Messianic Son of God who sacrificially died and rose again-recognized in all four Gospels. With this theological result in mind, this dissertation suggests that the narrative flow of the fourfold Gospel moves the reader from an introduction of the one anticipated in the Hebrew Bible to a concluding argument about belief in Him.
