Many churches, particularly established congregations in the United States, struggle with change. How can churches faithfully and effectively implement adaptive changes? The purpose of this dissertation is to curate and synthesize some of the most relevant resources and insights from contemporary scholars and practitioners to help churches more faithfully and effectively navigate change and continue to adapt to a quickly changing world. The complexity of leading congregational change, as well as US churches' broad inability to make meaningful and substantive changes, likely requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond simple solutions or existing popular strategies and tactics. The dissertation utilizes the four tasks of the practical theology method, as developed by Richard Osmer, to analyze the current national landscape of churches and congregational change, in conversation with certain passages of Scripture, selected voices in ecclesiology and organizational change research, and forty-five qualitative interviews recently conducted with pastoral leaders on the topic of congregational change. The dissertation first engages the descriptive task of practical theology. This task identifies key themes and trends that emerge from an analysis of national data on US congregations, which inform the changes that need to be made by today's churches. The interpretive task is employed to diagnose the core barriers and opportunities that shape why many churches struggle with change. The normative task focuses on where God may be leading churches in their change efforts by highlighting key contributions from Jurgen Moltmann's ecclesiology and identifying insights from congregational change interviews on what helps churches to faithfully and effectively change. Finally, the pragmatic task is engaged to suggest a process for change in local congregations, which conceives of change as a journey with four key movements and practical actions to engage in each movement.
