This dissertation explores the motivations driving the priorities and practices of predominantly Black Baptist churches in the southern coastal United States during the post-Civil Rights era. While existing research often focuses on urban Black churches, this study addresses a gap in understanding the motivations of rural Black churches in a new era. Using a constructivist grounded-theory approach and semi-structured interviews with pastors, the research identifies three key motivating themes: fulfilling New Testament mandates, providing holistic liberation, and adapting to the times. These findings challenge previous assumptions and offer new insights into rural Black churches in contemporary society.
