This qualitative, phenomenological study is of importance as it examined the wealth-building perspectives of Christian African American (AA) adults in the United States who experienced a disorienting financial hardship/loss. Further, the various phases of Transformative Learning (TL) as experienced by the study participants were delineated using their exact words or direct quotes. The research attempted to trace the movement of the study participants through the stages of TL to determine if any might have experienced a complete transformation of perspectives. The study revealed a number of key wealth-building perspectives that African American adults appear to have. For example, participants defined wealth as being able to live comfortably with no struggles. Many grew up living moment to moment, but as adults, they attempt to have some savings though nothing substantial. Many live paycheck to paycheck even though they were taught about the importance of work and savings. Further, many perceive that institutional racism and low wages are barriers to obtaining wealth for AAs. These perspectives support the current research that cites both structural and personal reasons for the growing Black and White wealth gap in the United States. The research study revealed several key findings delineating TL stages. For example, many participants experienced job loss as their disorienting financial dilemma (Stage 1). Some gained a sense of strength through their spirituality as they worked through their dilemma (self-examination/Stage 2). All 26 participants experienced a range of emotions, contributing to the research base which emphasizes that no transformation can occur unless one confronts emotions (Stages 1, 2, or 3). Many experienced critical reflection (Stage 3); a resounding 22 of the 26 participants relied on network/community support (recognition of discontent & sharing/Stage 4) and many experienced Stages 5, 6 & 7. Further, the research provides evidence of movement by some participants through the TL process though no pattern of that movement could be discerned. The research is one of few studies conducted to date focusing on delineating the stages and determining movement by the participants. The research explored wealth building and TL and provided possible conclusions/implications based on the results.
