This dissertation seeks to analyze two of the central, loadbearing doctrinal structures in John Paul II's Theology of the Body (TOB), viz., the human body as sign and gift. Chapter 1 explains the need for this project, introduces readers to John Paul II (JPII) and his TOB, and outlines the method and sequence that will guide our analysis of his work. This dissertation argues that evangelical Protestants can and should accept a modified version of both doctrines under scrutiny: the human body is both a sign and a gift.Chapter 2 explains John Paul II's conviction that the human body is a sign of the person; a structure that visibly manifests one's "I." After elucidating this doctrine as it is presented in TOB, we will submit it to biblical, theological, and historical scrutiny in view of evaluating its acceptability for evangelical adoption. We conclude with a summary of the doctrinal commitments necessary for understanding the human body as a sign in a way that comports with evangelical convictions.Chapter 3 explains John Paul II's conviction that the human body is a gift-that is, it is the substratum through which human persons offer a total gift of self in love to God and those around them. After elucidating this doctrine as it is presented in TOB, we will submit it to biblical, theological, and historical scrutiny in view of evaluating its acceptability for evangelical adoption. We conclude with a summary of the doctrinal commitments necessary for understanding the human body as a gift in a way that comports with evangelical convictions.Chapter 4 takes the doctrinal content of chapters 2 and 3 and applies it to life and ministry. Here we seek to demonstrate that understanding the human body as both a sign and a gift yields a variety of helpful insights related to sex, marriage, shame, lust, and other issues. Special attention is given to highlighting how the sexual ethics derived from JPII's somatology represent a significant improvement over the sexual ethics that shaped the Purity Movement of the 1990s.Chapter 5 offers a summary of this dissertation's argumentation and suggests opportunities for future research on JPII's TOB.
