The purpose of this dissertation was to explore cohesion within Luke 2:1-35 by employing a method known as Cohesive Harmony Analysis (CHA). This analytical approach was applied in conjunction with a comparison to Plutarch's Alex. 2.1-3.5. This comparison investigates the extent to which Hellenistic literary influences might have shaped Luke's style and structure within his birth narrative. By examining Plutarch as a representative example of broader Hellenistic historiographical practices, the analysis reveals various points of similarity between the Gospel of Luke and Plutarch's work. These similarities suggest that specific cohesive techniques and conventions of Hellenistic historiography impacted how Luke constructed his narrative to achieve cohesion and coherence. However, the study also uncovers significant differences between Luke's and Plutarch's historiography. These differences imply an additional layer of influence on Luke's writing beyond the Hellenistic conventions exemplified by Plutarch. This secondary influence suggests that Luke's narrative style and structure in his birth narrative were shaped by more than just Hellenistic historiography; they were influenced by other historiographical conventions, possibly including Jewish historiographical practices. Therefore, when analyzing the historiographical influences on the structure and narrative style of Luke's Gospel, a blended historiographical approach is essential to understanding the historiography of Luke's birth narrative. This approach should integrate both Hellenistic and Jewish historiographical perspectives rather than focusing solely on one category. By doing so, scholars can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the various factors that contributed to the creation of Luke's cohesive and coherent narrative.
