This study contributes to our understanding of how Greek verbal aspect functions at the level of discourse by describing the discourse function of verbal aspect within Mark's Gospel, especially with respect to discourse grounding. The approach of this study is inductive. It begins by analyzing the data of a consistent, unified textual corpus and then proceeds to draw conclusions about the discourse function of the various Greek tense-forms. This study describes and evaluates the models of the discourse function of verbal aspect proposed by Stanley E. Porter, Buist M. Fanning, and Constantine R. Campbell, concluding that Campbell's model best explains Mark's usage. The study also suggests modifications for each model that would improve their respective effectiveness in predicting the discourse function of verbal aspect within Mark's Gospel.
