The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the following research question: How does a dispositional account of human belief contribute to our biblical and theological understanding of "the fear of the Lord" motif found in Scripture? Chapter 1 introduces the topic and demonstrates the need for further study. Chapter 2 presents a survey of the literature on the subject and demonstrates three general approaches to the fear of the Lord, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of those approaches. Chapter 3 surveys the biblical material on the fear of the Lord and shows the complexity of the subject in Scripture, but the tensions between the three approaches remain. Chapter 4 considers the work of H. H. Price, specifically his philosophy of belief. Price's insights, particularly his understanding of beliefs as dispositions, provides the necessary material to construct a model by which to understand the fear of the Lord. In chapter 5, a model is offered drawn from Price's work, and that model is applied to the fear of the Lord. The model then is considered in light of the insights gained in chapters 2 and 3 to show that a dispositional account of the fear of the Lord can maintain the strengths of the previous approaches, avoid their weaknesses, and offer helpful insights. Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation with a brief summary of the dissertation and some directions for future research.
