Previous research on Isaiah 40-66 has neglected the theme of nothingness. In the corpus, nothingness is explored by means of metaphors, which describe it in terms of absence, lostness, emptiness, smallness and weightlessness, fragility, darkness, wind, dead plants, and wilderness. In this study, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Conceptual Blending Theory, and Frame Semantics will be employed as theoretical models to analyze these metaphors. A reading of the pericopes which use nothingness metaphors will be given, with emphasis on reading metaphors in their context in discourse. Then, Philosophical Criticism of the Hebrew Bible will supply the methodology for an analysis of the meontology (theory of nothingness) and ontology (theory of being) of the corpus. Eight types of nothingness are to be distinguished in the corpus: (1) simple nonexistence, (2) transcendent nothingness, (3) nothingness as a condition for the existence of created entities, (4) nothingness as privation of power and knowledge, (5) nothingness as the relative non-being of created entities, (6) nothingness as physical evil and death, (7) nothingness as moral evil, and (8) nothingness as a condition for moral excellence. According to this theory of nothingness, all so-called gods and humans are without comparison to Yahweh, because they are marked with nothingness, while he is identified with real being. Humans who turn to idolatry and injustice will experience nothingness, as a privation of power, knowledge, and purpose. Humans who are faithful to Yahweh will receive ongoing renewed strength from him, though they also may experience the nothingness of privation of purpose as they wait for his reward.
