This dissertation examines the question: What was John's purpose for writing the Fourth Gospel? The first two chapters aim to demonstrate that the question remains unsettled in scholarship, with no consensus existing regarding John's purpose. The following chapters examine the alignment of literary, historical, and theological factors pertinent to understanding the Evangelist's purpose in writing his Gospel account. Through the course of such examination, this dissertation will argue that John wrote with a comprehensive missionary purpose to reach unbelievers with the call to believe that the Christ, the Son of God, is Jesus.
