Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to explore the issues that grandparents face while raising their grandchildren. Grandparent caregivers were asked about the sources of both stress and satisfaction in their lives. Adaptation to change in grandparent headed families was investigated through in-depth interviews. The stories and experiences of grandparent caregivers were documented in their own words. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using QSR NUD*IST software. Findings and conclusions. There are multiple problems that precipitate the need for grandparents to raise their grandchildren. These problems include but are not limited to drug addiction, child abuse and neglect, mental illness and teen pregnancy. Grandparent caregivers experience financial, legal, social, emotional and family stress. Grandparent caregiving has been portrayed primarily as a women's role, but this study provided evidence that men are also involved in raising grandchildren. The perceptions of the stress associated with grandparent caregiving are different for men and women. Satisfaction and joy are also associated with raising grandchildren. Men and women perceive the sources of joy and satisfaction differently. Grandparent headed families experience many changes. Grandparents have difficulty blending grandparent and parent roles. Five stages of change occurred within the sample population. These stages included: Build-up Stage, Pre-crisis Stage, The Defining Moment: Crisis Stage, Short Term Changes: Adjustment Stage and Long Term Changes: Adaptation Stage. Parent-Child Relationships continue even when contact with the middle family generation is infrequent. Grandparents found personal reflection on the meaning they find in their experiences as grandparents raising grandchildren.
