Although custodial grandparenting is not a new phenomenon in the African-American community, its current practice differs somewhat from its sociohistorical manifestations and may have a significant impact on the health of the grandparents. The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between psychological and/or physical health outcomes of African-American custodial grandparents and their contextual factors (e.g., age, gender, number of custodial grandchildren), perceived social support, and role meaning. One hundred thirty-eight African-American custodial grandparents completed measures of perceived social support (SPS; Cutrona & Russell, 1987), role meaning (GMQ; Thomas, 1990), psychological health (SPWB; Ryff, 1989b), and physical health (SF-12; Ware, Kosinki, & Keller, 1998). Results of the correlational analyses (Pearson R and canonical correlation) revealed that several dimensions of psychological health and physical health were associated with several contextual factors and several dimensions of perceived social support and role meaning. Recommendations for future research and implications for counseling psychology are presented.
