Many offenders with mental health illnesses or substance abuse disorders struggle when released from prison. This study discussed the causes of the barriers and unprecedented stigmas that justice-involved individuals may face once released from prison. A qualitative theory approach explored participants' stigmas and barriers they faced related to seeking to participate in a community-based treatment program. The theoretical framework consisted of a cognitive behavior theory approach. This qualitative study aimed to identify the essence of the individuals' lived experiences while ascertaining and defining the phenomenon (Cilesiz, 2010).The following Interpretive Phenomenological research explained the essence of the justice-involved individuals' lived experiences while it ascertained and defined the phenomenon (Cilesiz, 2010). The researcher recruited fifteen previously incarcerated participants who could answer questions about demographic information and their overall experience of community-based treatment via in-person semi-structured interviews. Research has primarily centered around the process and programs available to those incarcerated and released to community supervised probation or parole. However, the individuals released unsupervised have no recommended programs to engage in that have mental health issues, substance abuse addictions, and community support for other needs to reintegrate into the community. Data acquired from the interviews were coded and categorized for analysis to find common themes. Considering the feedback from those who participated in the study can shed light on future policy changes to how programs for unsupervised men and women once implemented.
