The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived influence of social, psychological, and physiological factors on the caregiving behavior of grandparents. More specifically, the researcher was concerned with the effects of the variables of gender, ethnicity, age, and marital status on the perceived influence of physical, economic, social and mental health factors regarding grandparents raising their grandchildren. An Ex Post Facto Design was employed in this investigation to collect and analyze the data. One hundred eighty (180) grandparents from grandparent support groups of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) were selected to participate in this empirical study. An instrument entitled, "The Hawk Grandparenting Survey" was used to gather the data. The instrument was validated by a group of authorities in Sociology, Psychology, and Research. The instrument had an Alpha Coefficient of .96 for the test as a whole. Moreover, the data were tested through the application of the One-Way Analysis of Variance and the Scheffe follow-up test. Among the conclusions of this study were: (1) In general, male and female grandparents had similar perceptions regarding the influence of physical, economic, social and mental related factors on their caregiving behavior. (2) The variable ethnicity did have some effect on the perceptions of grandparents with regard to the influence of physical and economic related factors on their caregiving behavior. (3) The grandparents' ethnicity had no effect on their perceptions with respect to social and mental related factors on their caregiving behavior. (4) It appears that the older the grandparents, the more favorable their perceptions regarding the influence of mental related factors on their caregiving behavior.
