This qualitative study explored how leaders in nonprofit organization plan and develop strategies for the succession of executive leaders and identify the barriers and benefits that leaders perceive inhibit succession planning in NPOs. While there is existing research on succession planning in NPOs there has been limited information on the barriers, benefits, and strategies for succession planning. The rationale for this study is to narrow the gap in literature and research on executive leadership succession planning in NPOs. A succession planning model and the resource-based theory served as the conceptual framework. The overarching research question that guided the study was How do executive leaders of NPOs plan and develop strategies for executive succession. A qualitative inquiry was the research methodology used for this study. The twelve participants for this study included executive leaders working in NPOs with 1 year or more experience. The data were collected via semi structured interviews with participants. The interviews were uploaded to NVivo12, a qualitative data analysis software which assisted in analyzing the data to identify themes. Three themes (succession planning, time, and resources), and three subthemes (board involvement, funding, and staffing). These findings show that while succession planning in NPO has improved there is still more work that needs to be done. Further study should explore if the size of the organization affects succession planning, for example, large NPOs based on the IRS standards. A study geared more closely to the strategies these larger organizations are using to see if size and finances does matter.
