Nonprofit organizations play an important role in society providing vital services to communities. The problem is that there is a lack of empirical research on insider succession planning within nonprofit organizations. The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory case study was to examine how leaders of nonprofit organizations implemented processes for insider succession planning. There were two research questions that guided the study: 1) How do leaders of nonprofit organizations implement processes for insider succession planning? 2) How do boards of directors, human resources departments, and executive directors prepare a pipeline for identifying potential insiders who may be candidates for executive leadership roles? The researcher interviewed leaders of nonprofit organizations in Northern New Jersey, using semi structured interviews conducted via Zoom, to identify their insider succession planning processes. The three themes that emerged were: (a) insider succession planning and process development, (b) resource identification for leadership positions, and (c) leadership development: program implementation and evaluation. The study provides information to nonprofit practitioners and leaders to develop and implement formal insider succession plans to properly enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of insider personnel to enable their advancement to executive level positions.
