The relationship between wettability and resistivity index has been studied previously, but no direct correlations have been established. This study aims to compare experimental contact angle measurements to develop an empirical correlation between well log data and the wettability of core samples from four wells in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) and one well in the Eagle Ford Shale (EFS). The experimental results showed a correlation with resistivity, with the highest correlation found in the deep resistivity log. After removing non-correlative variables from the resistivity index only the true resistivity variable remained. Given that water saturation is dependent on porosity in resistivity log interpretation and correlative to the resistivity index, this suggests that water saturation may not correlate with wettability measurements within the examined range. Interfacial tension measurements of oil sourced from the TMS were used to convert the measured water-air contact angle measurements to water-oil contact angle measurements. When imbibition rates are low, measurable changes of the weight of shale can take hours or days to occur and the volume of imbibing fluids will change due to evaporation of the fluid to the atmosphere. Optical goniometry machines use photography to measure the contact angle of small droplets and, utilizing proper image calibration, can measure the height, width, and therefore volume, of the droplet. The volume change of droplets can be measured over time and used to derive the evaporation and imbibition rate of the droplet. A novel methodology was developed to measure the volume, liquid/air surface area, and liquid/solid surface area of spheroid droplets using optical goniometry measurements to differentiate between the evaporation and imbibition rates. The evaporation rate and imbibition rate can be numerically derived by using nonlinear optimization to minimize the difference between the fitted volume and measured volume at all time steps. This methodology demonstrates the ability to efficiently measure the rate of imbibition during the primary imbibition phase on porous media.
