Habitat occupancy modelling is a useful tool for at-risk species with healthy populations and can be applied to understand the habitat requirements of specific populations. This study examined fine-scale distribution of the Threatened Pugnose Shiner (Miniellus anogenus) in the Old Ausable Channel, Ontario, Canada. Statistical analysis, species co-occurrence matrices, and occupancy models were used to identify environmental variables related to Pugnose Shiner distribution in a freshwater system isolated from an agricultural watershed. Pugnose Shiner had positive co-occurrence with Blackchin Shiner, Blacknose Shiner, and Golden Shiner; there were no negative species co-occurrences. Pugnose Shiner were most abundant in sites that had low conductivity and turbidity, and high amounts of stonewort (Chara sp.). Invasive Eurasian Milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is currently spreading in the Old Ausable Channel and may further fragment the amount of occupied and accessible habitat to the Pugnose Shiner.
