Several ocean worlds with subsurface oceans have been identified, yet their specific characteristics remain largely unknown. This study investigates the development of a conceptual underwater robot designed to explore the subsurface oceans of icy moons, focusing on Europa, Titan, and Enceladus. The design is inspired by the propulsion mechanisms of monotrichous bacterial flagella, utilizing a biomimetic approach to maximize maneuverability and adaptability in extreme underwater environments. A multidisciplinary methodology is employed, integrating computational modeling, material selection, and experimental validation. The study draws parallels between the extreme aquatic environment of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) and the hypothesized conditions of extraterrestrial subsurface oceans. The physical properties of AABW, such as density, salinity, viscosity, and thermal behavior, are used as a model to inform the robot's design. MATLAB simulations analyze the dynamics of a helical flagellum, exploring velocity, efficiency, and the influence of rotational motion on propulsion. These findings are further refined using COMSOL Multiphysics to conduct two-dimensional fluid-structure interaction studies, examining displacement and force responses of a vibrating flagellum within a flow channel. The propulsion system features a waterproof brushless motor driving a silicone-based helical flagellum connected via a flexible hook-like mechanism. By modeling two scenarios-one with a rigid flagellum alone and another with an elliptical body-the study provides a comparative analysis of system performance. Key parameters such as fluid forces, displacement, and propulsive efficiency are measured to optimize the flagellum's dimensions and material properties. The results of these analyses form the foundation for future experimental validation and three-dimensional modeling of the flagellum's rotational dynamics in still water. This research advances the conceptualization of underwater robotic propulsion systems for exploration in extraterrestrial oceans. By harnessing biomimicry and leveraging the knowledge of extreme Earth environments, this study contributes to the development of adaptable, resilient underwater exploration systems. The integration of computational and experimental approaches enables precise design optimization, advancing the potential for future exploration of ocean worlds beyond Earth.
