Corals host a variety of fish and invertebrates that influence the population structure of the reef. Occupants have a net effect on a coral's life cycle processes, either to its benefit or detriment. Here, we develop a deterministic population model of the size-frequency of corals in a landscape affected by coral-associated fish and invertebrates (CAFI). We rigorously establish well-posedness and show conditional convergence to an equilibrium solution. We further analyze the net effect of CAFI on the size-frequency equilibrium and compare our results to previously established coral reef models. We demonstrate that deleterious CAFI generate landscapes with greater amounts of space unoccupied by corals, which, in comparison to a more beneficial CAFI effect, promotes landscapes with a greater abundance of small and large corals.Conversely, the size-frequency and spatial configuration of coral landscapes affect the population dynamics of CAFI. CAFI identify suitable habitats (corals) through the use of signals, especially chemicals emitted by corals. Therefore, the amount of certain sized corals (size-frequency) and relative neighboring distances (coral spatial orientation) of a landscape influence CAFI settlement and post-settlement information. We develop a model of the chemical profile of coral landscapes, and approximate the expected CAFI settlement and post-settlement densities to individual corals. Further, we illustrate how CAFI are stolen among corals in clustered environments, and are drawn to corals in isolation.
