In the U.S. southeast, the Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) is a valuable fishery providing economic benefit to coastal communities. Additionally, oysters are often referred to as ecosystem engineers because they create structured reefs and increase coastal resilience. The focus of this study was to quantify temporal and spatial environmental variability for factors impactful to oyster growth and calcification (pH, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA), and equilibrium pCO2) across two southeast salt marshes, Galveston, Texas, and Savannah, Georgia. These interactions, influenced by tidal action and extensive biological productivity in the estuary, can result in low saturation states and create poor conditions for oyster growth. Identifying correlation between these environmental factors and oyster growth can provide stakeholders with knowledge that can be used to select appropriate shellfish growing areas. We hypothesize oysters grown under optimal conditions will be less energetically challenged and therefore maximize the oyster's growth rate and accelerate the delivery of ecosystem services. In Georgia, adult and juvenile oyster growth studies were conducted to evaluate connections between water quality and oyster growth. Diel pH variability was similar (~0.5 units day-1 ) between sites in Texas and Georgia, except for Prairie Preserve, which had the highest diel pH variability, most likely due to limited hydraulic exchange with the larger bay. However, DIC concentrations and TA were higher in Texas than in Georgia, resulting in higher saturation indices across all sites in Galveston Bay. In Georgia, saturation indices were below nominal calcification threshold (Ω < 1) at the low salinity site, however, oysters actively recruited and grew. Coffee Bluff had lowest saturation state (Ω = 0.4 ± 0.1), but had highest oyster spat recruitment (16.6 ± 0.7 spat m-2 d-1 ). Moreover, ontogenetic differences in growth suggest optimum growing conditions may not be the same at all life stages.
