Nursing faculty provide education to students, using a rigorous curriculum necessary for nursing students to prepare for, complete, and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Passing the NCLEX is the entry to becoming a registered nurse for all prelicensure nursing students at the associate and baccalaureate levels. However, a major problem in nursing schools is student retention. Researchers have studied many avenues to increasing retention in baccalaureate nursing programs, including mentoring programs. While many researchers address mentoring to retention in baccalaureate programs, few studies address formal, informal, or peer mentoring in associate degree nursing programs. This research explored nursing faculty experiences of informal mentoring with first-year students enrolled in associate degree nursing programs. A qualitative design, using a basic approach, guided the research. The transformational theory was used as a framework for the study. The sample included ten nursing faculty who had master's degrees and who instructed first-year students who were enrolled in an associate degree nursing program. The faculty participants were interviewed using Zoom audio. Otti.ai was used to transcribe the interviews from the audio files. The qualitative software program QUIRKOS© supported analyses of the data and the development of themes. Three themes emerged from the data to answer the research question. They included being a positive role model for students, supporting students, and promoting positive changes in students. More research is needed to measure informal mentoring and how faculty support influences positive student outcomes.
