Background: The growing older adult population requires considerable medical attention. Self-selected gait velocity (SSGV) and physical activity (PA) are key elements in the overall health of the older adult population. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between pre-admission PA and SSGV and compare each of these variables to length of stay (LOS) in older adults admitted into an IRF. Methods: This observational, correlational study was conducted from October 2023 to August 2024 and used convenience sampling from San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in Fresno, California. Upon admission and discharge, a single trial of SSGV was measured using the 10-meter walk test. Pre- admission PA was collected using the Morgenstern physical activity questionnaire and was conducted once during participant admission. Results: A Wilcoxon signed- rank test showed a significant improvement in SSGV from admission to discharge (z=2.66, p=0.002). The Spearman's Rho correlation analyses found no significant correlations between PA and SSGV difference (r=0.139, p=0.354), 2) pre-admission PA and LOS (r=0.148, p=0.654), and 3) LOS and SSGV difference (r=0.482, p=0.921), in. Conclusion: While a statistically significant change in SSGV was noted, no significance was found between 1) pre-admission PA and SSGV difference, 2) pre-admission PA and LOS, and 3) LOS and SSGV. As the older adult population continues to grow, further research is needed to better understand these factors in an IRF setting.
