Objective: To understand how perceptions of PT services interact with common barriers to PT utilization and prior PT use, as well as describe the perceptions of in-person and Telehealth PT for adults living in the United States with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: An exploratory cross-sectional study was performed using a survey distributed via Qualtrics starting November 2023 and through August 2024. Individuals' perceptions of the PT profession, PT services, and PT effectiveness were collected, along with previous PT experience, encounters with common barriers to PT utilization, sociodemographic data, perceptions of Telehealth PT services, and clinical data. Analysis was done using scores derived from subjects' answers, as both interval data and categorical variables, and inferential statistical tests. A Mann-Whitney U test and Student's T-test were performed with a 95% confidence interval to assess how PT perceptions differ amongst groups. Results: The sample included 38 participants, between the ages of 18 and 80 years old, primarily female and with some level of higher education. The difference between "Prior-PT users" and "Non-PT users" median PT perception scores was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The difference between "Experience Common Barriers" and "Does Not Experience Common Barriers" mean PT perception scores was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Physical Therapists were ranked as the foremost provider less frequently than primary care physicians (PCPs) and pain specialists, but more frequently than chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, and the use of pharmacologist. 68.4% of participants indicated positive perceptions of PT. 65.8% of respondents expressed a willingness to use Telehealth PT services, however, half of the sample were unaware of how to access Telehealth services. The most agreed upon statement regarding perceptions of Telehealth PT was "Telehealth PT would be helpful for me and/or others." Conclusion: The CLBP population, in agreement with the general population, recognizes PT as a valuable secondary component to their care plan. Both experiencing barriers to service and prior-PT use may negatively impact perceptions of PT for those with CLBP. Telehealth is not perceived as equal in effectiveness to in-person services at this time. Perceptions of Physical Therapy for both in-person and Telehealth services is a complex construct that deserves more attention in the clinical setting and through research.
