The purpose of this study was to delineate factors in the home environment that support the development of self-determination in individuals with disabilities. There were two goals of the study: to identify and describe salient themes that better define the phenomenon of self-determination and parental child-rearing practices and attitudes regarding its development, and to describe the physical space of the home environment in order to better understand its relevance to the development of self-determination in individuals with disabilities. Obtaining information regarding factors present in the home environment which may facilitate the development of self-determination, can provide professionals working with families guidance in creating opportunities and developing educational/community programs which support personal identity and autonomy. Qualitative comparative case study was chosen as the methodology for the study and included four families with family members ranging between five and twenty-eight years of age. The following questions guided the study: (1) How do parents perceive their role in promoting the development of self-determined skills in their son or daughter with disabilities? (2) Are indicators present in the home environment that support the development of self-determined behaviors? (3) How are individuals with disabilities given opportunities for choice, control, and decision making in their home environment? (4) In what ways have families designed the home environments to promote the development of skills of self-determination for their family member with a disability? Three principle findings related to self-determination were found. These findings included attitudinal and environmental factors describing parent roles, providing individuals with opportunities, and creating bridges. The conclusions based on these findings included: (1) parents define themselves and act as advocates for their family and as a support system that instills a sense of self-worth; (2) parental support and structure changes in order to compliment growing needs for independence; and (3) parents assist in creating linkages between skill level and activity, and bridges between the home and other levels of the family's ecosystem. The study also includes descriptions of ways families have designed their homes to promote the development of self-determination.
