Existing research on middle-aged gay men's long-term consensual non-monogamous relationship experiences is small compared to the corpus of research focused on other dimensions of gay men's lives, including sexuality. In the past decade, interest in CNM relationships has increased. Some research investigates heterosexual and sexual minority groups' behavior and attitudes on CNM. To date, several quantitative studies have examined the relational components of nonmonogamy among gay male couples. The dissertation research's objective was to observe and extract the patterns from narrative data, and to provide a theoretically informed interpretation of middle-aged gay men's long-term CNM relationships. Qualitatively exploring the CNM experiences of gay men in middle adulthood can generate meanings and themes from middle-aged gay men in long-term CNM relationships. Using thematic analysis, four core themes were identified to illustrate the experiences of middle-aged gay men in long-term CNM relationships: centrality, freedom, legacy, and contentment.
