How have humans tolerated the pain of grief? Grief literature, overwhelmingly steeped in theories of phases, stages, or tasks, assumes a completion to the suffering. Rich in image, symbol, metaphor, and myth, depth psychology infuses the mysteries of existence with an uroboric element. How might this tension of opposites be held? This thesis uses hermeneutic and heuristic methodologies to ask how adding a mythopoetic, depth psychological perspective to existing grief theory speaks to clients suffering with grief and loss. Infusing clinical psychologist J. William Worden's four tasks of mourning with the widespread earth-diver cosmogony, the author parallels the physiological transformations inherent in a free dive's descent with the psychological transformations within grief. After a challenging and transformational journey from terrestrial to aquatic being, the earth-diver resurfaces with something new. The author, a free diver, uses insights of personal grief and work as a bereavement therapist to buoy her findings.
