Nonsexual touch, such as a handshake or a hug, is a commonplace occurrence in psychotherapy. Despite this, theoretical arguments for and against the use of touch in therapy have contributed to a sense that touch between therapist and client is controversial. Most therapists feel that their training programs did not adequately address the use of touch in therapy and that codes of ethics offer little to no guidance. Moreover, empirical research on the effects of nonsexual touch in therapy is scarce, and variation in outcomes measured makes comparison of results across studies difficult. The current study used qualitative research methods to identify aspects of nonsexual touch in therapy that were important from the perspectives of clients. The participants of this study were four former or current psychotherapy clients who had experienced some form of nonsexual touch between themselves and their therapists. The semi-structured interview protocol included questions designed to increase insight into past findings on the topic in addition to questions designed to generate novel ideas based on the unique experiences of the participants. Data analysis drew from the qualitative method of thematic analysis in order to identify themes based on past research as well as themes rooted in the raw data of the study itself. The seven superordinate themes that emerged were: (a) discussion of touch, (b) appropriateness of touch to the situation, (c) interaction of touch and the working alliance, (d) interaction of touch and therapist/client gender, (e) benefits of touch, (f) harms of touch, and (g) neutral reactions to touch. A total of 25 subthemes related to these superordinate themes also emerged. Discussion of this study's findings included implications for research, clinical practice, and training.
