The United States has the highest child mortality rates and the lowest life expectancy at birth compared to the other 19 wealthiest nations. Children are at most risk of death during the first year of their life and then between 15 and 19 years old. After accidental death, gun violence is the leading cause of death for children. The wealthiest nations in the world have experienced a progressive decline in child mortality rates, whereas the United States has encountered a steady increase since the 1980s. The research has indicated that bereaved parents experience a range of psychological and physical health-related outcomes related to grief, including a higher risk of premature death. This dissertation explored the most prominent grief coping models that posit the ways people manage and adjust to bereavement, with particular emphasis on the dual process model (DPM). The literature review focused on the relational factors that inform grieving for both the individual and the couple. When examining individuals, the data indicated gender differences in coping styles and grief outcomes, but gender differences did not appear within couples. Building upon these complexities, this dissertation designed a semi-structured protocol to deepen the understanding of parental bereavement by exploring the experiences of self-identified LGBTQ bereaved parents, who have previously been absent in the research. This dissertation produced a scholarly product through the development of a grant proposal. The grant proposal aims to fund research to explore the coping styles of self-identified LGBTQ parents who have experienced child loss. The proposed study seeks to understand how gender identities and roles influence coping strategies compared to those observed in previous studies of bereaved heterosexual, cisgender parents. Also, the proposed research intends to examine the ways relational factors affect couples' coping styles, grief outcomes, and relationship satisfaction.
