In the Information age, people are exposed to information from different sources and are required to choose, evaluate, and integrate these sources in decision making processes in everyday life. Information is a product of economic value, for which people are willing to pay. This value is dynamic, mainly subjective, and can be affected by different factors. One potential factor that might affect economic value is people's epistemic thinking, meaning their thinking about the nature of knowledge and knowing. The present study aims to examine the relationship between epistemic thinking and consumption of information products, perceived economic value of information, information-based decisions and confidence in these decisions. The study is based on the theoretical framework of epistemic thinking developed by Kuhn and Weinstock (2002), which describes three main epistemic perspectives (absolutism, multiplism, and evaluativism), and on Raban's theoretical approach (2007) for the subjective value of information. Because information is an experience good, its consumers cannot determine its real value before use. Therefore, the perceived economic value of information was measured twice by willingness-to-pay (WTP); before use (subjective value) and after use (experience value). 106 university students participated in an experiment conducted in a computer lab. The experiment involved an online information store which the participants were invited to use in order to reach a decision concerning a controversial topic. Participants were assigned to two different pricing conditions; one with paid information based on an incentive-compatible bidding mechanism (payment condition) and the other with information offered at a zero price (free condition). Results indicated a confirmation bias among all participants in information choices and judgements. Subjective value of information was found to be higher than its experience value. Surprisingly, differences in epistemic perspectives were found between the two conditions, suggesting an epistemic change has occurred following different payment requirements. Specifically, in the payment condition evaluativism was higher and absolutism was lower than in the free condition. Epistemic perspectives were not found to be predictors for number of selected information sources or WTP for different types of information. However, the results indicate that participants noticed authors' positions and took these into account in their selections. This is a pioneering study indicating a potential relation between consumption characteristics of information products and epistemic thinking of information users. Differences between the free and payment conditions are analyzed and discussed. The study has theoretical and practical implications, connecting the fields of information economics and educational psychology.
