Spousal loss is a near universal experience for individuals who are married. In the United States, 13 million individuals are widowed at any given time (Infurna & Luthar, 2017). Current literature is conflicted on grief and bereavement in older adults who have experienced conjugal loss. Some indicate that spousal loss, while common, is more likely to turn into complicated bereavement for older adults than younger adults (Bruinsma et al., 2015). However, other researchers do not find the current evidence compelling and point to studies that demonstrate older individuals cope better with spousal loss than their younger counterparts (DiGiacomo et al., 2016). To better understand bereavement in older adults, this research study inquired into the phenomenology of self in anticipated loss in surviving spouses aged 55 and over. Three individuals completed a semi-structured interview consisting of six questions regarding the experience of self before, during, and after the anticipated spousal loss, and a seventh question that asked if the participants had any additional information they wished to share. Each interview lasted approximately 90 minutes. After completion of the interviews, the researcher coded the data and identified major themes using the Quirkos software (Quirkos, 2018). Six major themes presented in the data set: perception of spouse during the end of life phase, loss of identity, impact of the disease, new identity and new patterns in response to anticipated death, gratitude, and acceptance as fostered by both family and religion. The results of this study may help guide necessary future studies into sense of self in anticipated spousal loss.
