Despite the important role that sexual functioning plays in well-being, social stigma prevents conversations about sexual health. Body image is rarely acknowledged, but may disrupt sexual functioning, especially in women. Negative body image can have a number of negative consequences, including impaired sexual functioning. Examining sexual functioning in depth can shed light on the intricate nuances of experiencing a negative body image. However, much of the current literature is outdated and has focused primarily on women while men have been neglected. For example, Meana and Nunnick (2006) examined gender differences in the content of cognitive distractions during sex and found that men reported more performance based distractions while women reported more appearance based distractions. These findings demonstrate that gender norms may influence sexual functioning differently for men and women. While these studies are relevant to the topic at large, results are outdated and do not specifically address sexual functioning as a comprehensive construct. Therefore, the current study, rooted in social comparison theory and objectification theory, examined the relationship between body image and sexual satisfaction and body image and avoidance of body exposure during sex. Results demonstrated that for both men and women, avoidance of body exposure during sexual activity was negatively correlated with sexual satisfaction (r = -.39 p <.05; r -.53= p <.01). In contrast, the negative correlation between poor body image and sexual satisfaction was significant only for women (r = -.45, p<.01). T-tests of gender differences revealed that sexual satisfaction is not significantly different for men and women, but women report significantly worse body image (t = -3.65, p<.01) and significantly more avoidance of body exposure during sex (t = -2.73, p<.01) as compared to men. Results are explored within the context of supporting prevention efforts and informing gender-specific diagnostic and treatment practices.
