Both researchers and practitioners strive to find ways to address co-occurring substance abuse and mood disorders (anxiety, depression), which are increasingly among the greatest health burdens facing our global society. Clinical evidence indicates that the current treatment protocol for mood disorders relies largely on pharmacological interventions (McHugh et al., 2013). However, the potentially harmful side effects of anti-depressants are leading clients and counselors alike to seek non-pharmacological remedies in order to solve this growing problem, especially considering the fact that substance abuse treatments are typically aimed at eliminating triggers from users' environments. The current clinical evidence on the efficacy of psychological, and the integration of Solution Focus Brief Therapy and Mindfulness interventions targeted at co-occurring substance abuse and mood disorders is insufficient, and there is a need for a comprehensive solution to this growing problem. This instrumental multiple case study (Stake, 2006) investigated the combined use of Solution-Focus Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Mindfulness in order to gain an understanding of counselors' experiences of who integrated these approaches in their counseling practices. The goal of such practice was to learn if this paradigm would mitigate the emotional and psychological effects of co-occurring substance abuse and mood disorders. This instrumental multiple case study adopted a qualitative research design, using in-depth interviews, shared notes, researcher's reflections, and literature as data sources. The collected qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. The findings of this study narrow extant gaps in the clinical evidence and produced significant contributions to the enhancement of evidence-based treatments in counseling.
