This dissertation examines the discourses that inform the representation of female adolescence in the US media. Of particular interest is how those constructions have transformed over time and how they are used in the formation of female youth cultures. Through explorations of contemporary girls' cultures and media representations of female adolescence, this dissertation attempts to provide new ways of understanding die interdependence of gender and generation in the construction of subjectivity. Arguing that intellectual discourse participates in the struggle for ideological hegemony, the first section of this dissertation, "Theorizing Female Adolescence," explores the various reasons youth studies and feminist criticism traditionally have excluded female youth and girls' cultures as legitimate subjects for analysis. The second section, "Representing Female Adolescence," is comprised of specific examinations of the discourses operable in representations of female adolescence mass-produced by the magazine, film, and television industries. In order to historically contextualize contemporary media constructions of female adolescence, an analysis of the social, cultural, and technological conditions that have led to transformations in American girlhood is provided. As I demonstrate, because media texts contain multiple and often highly contradictory ideologies, they not only (re)produce and normalize particular positions of female adolescence, but also often allow for girls' critical distance and resistance. The final section, "Experiencing Female Adolescence," focuses on female youth cultures, and includes an in-depth examination of Riot Grrrl, a contemporary feminist youth culture which has broadened the spectrums of both girls' culture and female adolescent subjectivity by privileging girls' cultural productivity and political agency. Noting how teenage girls have been constructed primarily as consumers by both the entertainment industries and academics who study girls' cultural practices, my analysis of contemporary female youth cultures attempts to move media and cultural studies in new directions, by demonstrating that the oppositions of production/consumption and labor/leisure are no longer useful for scholars wanting to understand the complex ways people interact with cultural forms.
