Fans engage in the same activities as artists: they write fiction, draw pictures, design costumes, compose music, create films and video games. But why do they do it? I believe that fans engage in artistic practices for purposes that often go beyond aesthetic achievement. Fanboys engage in finish practices from an affirmational standpoint: skills upgrading, online popularity, direct financial gain - these functions of fan labor are extensively researched by fan scholars. But what about fangirls, members of transformational fandom, whose labor does not seem to align with the capitalist mode of production? What functions does their labor perform? My research aims to examine the global landscape of production and understand the role of transformational fan labor, which extends beyond the sphere of capital accumulation. To achieve this goal, I employ an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on four academic lenses used to explain creativity: cortical arousal theory (neurocognitive sciences), the theory of catharsis and sublimation (psychoanalysis), the theorization of artistic activism (politics), the theory of art as play (ludic philosophy). By applying these lenses to transformational fan labor, I argue that it provides fans with tools to achieve extrinsic values such as: (1) a discharge of nonpathological neurocognitive energies, which stimulates fans to use the so-called cognitive surplus; (2) a release of pathological psychic energies, which helps fans to resolve their internal conflicts or channel psychic energy away from them through self-performed art therapy; (3) satisfaction of fans? desire to make politically charged statements. I also emphasize the intrinsic values of transformational fan labor, claiming that because of play elements, fan labor may function as (4) a ludic activity whose value goes beyond utilitarian purposes. The theoretical findings about all four non-capitalistic functions of fan labor are demonstrated in a series of case studies. Combined with the theory of affirmational fan labor, they form a comprehensive classification of fan labor functions in the global landscape of production.
