For over 50 years, I have observed ballet dancers bifurcating themselves in class and performance. Focusing on the external body shapes of classical technique, they ignore their internal thoughts, feelings, and emotions. In the 1920s and 30s, Konstantin Stanislavsky faced a similar situation with opera singers, who concentrated on producing beautiful vocal tones and ignored the interior life of their roles. Through his system of acting technique, he attempted to merge "the inner and the outer" in order to create holistic performances onstage. In this paper, I will apply major elements of Stanislavsky's Method of Physical Action to an original contemporary ballet. By doing actions, in the form of verb infinitives, the dancer's interiority and exteriority are engaged simultaneously. I will argue that this method can counteract the external focus of ballet dancers, stimulate their inner lives, and produce embodied movement.
