This dissertation reconsiders the history of environmental art between 1972 and 1982 by examining how select projects by Hans Haacke, Alan Sonfist, and Agnes Denes exposed the infrastructural, institutional, and economic systems that shape the production and reception of ecological art. While environmental art has often been interpreted as a retreat into nature or as a form of activist protest, this study contends that the works analyzed here confront the constructedness of "nature" and the contradictions of working within systems they simultaneously critique. Rather than presenting environmental restoration or symbolic opposition to industrial development, these projects operate at the intersection of biological processes and institutional conditions, revealing the mutual imbrication of ecological systems with urban planning, museum infrastructures, labor relations, and regulatory mechanisms.Drawing on methodologies from art history, environmental humanities, and science and technology studies, the dissertation emphasizes the material and logistical conditions of environmental art. It pays particular attention to how these works were conceived, negotiated, built, and maintained-processes that are often obscured by their photographic documentation. By foregrounding issues such as infrastructural reliance, site-specific negotiation, and maintenance labor, the study challenges dominant narratives that privilege visual spectacle or formal innovation, and instead theorizes environmental art as a set of operational systems embedded in political and economic contexts.Key to this analysis is a reconsideration of the notion of participation and institutional critique in ecological terms. The dissertation argues that these works destabilize the assumption that ecological art exists outside of or in opposition to the systems it addresses. Instead, they stage their own dependencies-on municipal authorities, technical infrastructure, curatorial mediation, and labor-thereby rendering visible the structural entanglements that sustain both environmental degradation and its artistic representation. In doing so, they complicate conventional distinctions between natural and artificial, organic and constructed, critical and complicit.Ultimately, this project contributes to the historiography of postwar art by reframing environmental art as neither a didactic form of protest nor a romantic appeal to nature, but as a mode of practice grounded in process, negotiation, and contradiction. It positions environmental art of the 1970s and early 1980s as a form of situated knowledge that discloses the ecological and institutional conditions of its own possibility.
