This dissertation aims to contextualize and assess Joseph Stennett's (1663-1713) eucharistic hymns, positioning him as a representative figure of early Particular Baptist spirituality in London, whose hymns served as formative expressions of Baptist doctrine and practice in corporate worship. To demonstrate the importance of Stennett's hymns, this study conducts a hymnological analysis of his Hymns in Commemoration of the Sufferings of Our Blessed Saviour Jesus Christ, Compos'd for the Celebration of his Holy Supper to discern the eucharistic piety of early Particular Baptists. This dissertation argues that Stennett's eucharistic hymns, as revealed through a comprehensive hymnological analysis, express specific aspects of eucharistic piety for eighteenth-century British Particular Baptists, demonstrating and clarifying their adherence to memorial views of Christ's sacrifice, their reception of sustaining grace available at the table, and their affirmation of eschatological hope in the resurrected Christ.Chapter one explains the thesis and methodology of this dissertation, positioning Stennett's hymns as significant liturgical artifacts that embody eighteenth-century Particular Baptist eucharistic piety. In addition, this chapter defines important terminology and presents a review of relevant primary and secondary literature.Chapter two situates Stennett's eucharistic hymns in their historical context by summarizing the origins of the Particular Baptist tradition, specifically considering its connection to Puritan Separatists. It then surveys Stennett's life, relying heavily on the Works of the Late Reverend and Learned Mr. Joseph Stennett: In Five Volumes to Which Is Prefixed Some Account of His Life, as well as other relevant historical sources. Specific attention is given to Stennett's education and skill with language, as this skill led to his mastery of writing poetry and, ultimately, hymnody. The chapter also considers the hymn-singing controversy that shaped the worship practices of Baptist churches in the eighteenth century.Chapter three presents a thorough hymnological analysis of the fifty hymns in Stennett's eucharistic hymnal. This study examines the primary data of this dissertation represented fully in the appendices, which include a complete transcription of Stennett's fifty eucharistic hymns as well as categorized lists of these hymns according to hymnological, biblical, and lyrical taxonomies. The analysis follows Scotty Gray's approach in Hermeneutics of Hymnody (2015), specifically considering the poetic quality, biblical content, and use of vocabulary in Stennett's hymns, and laying a foundation for theological reflection. Chapter four displays the eucharistic piety revealed in Stennett's hymns by offering theological reflections on the analysis from chapter three. These reflections follow the same analytical categories as before-poetry, biblicism, and vocabulary-to work towards a synthesis of the most significant theological ideas in Stennett's eucharistic hymns: (1) a holistic remembrance of Christ's incarnation, death, and resurrection; (2) a portrayal of the Lord's Supper as a means of divine grace; and (3) an eschatological orientation that urges believers to live faithfully, anticipating Christ's ultimate reign. The dissertation concludes with a summary, which is quickly followed by the process of theological scrutiny, as advocated in Christopher Ellis's Gathering: A Theology and Spirituality of Worship in Free Church Tradition (2004). This scrutiny validates the proposed piety found in Stennett's hymns by aligning it with Scripture and the confessional text of early Particular Baptists: the Second London Baptist Confession (1689). Following this evaluation, this study offers seven suggestions for ways in which Stennett's hymns might be used as a worship resource for eucharistic renewal in Baptist churches. These concluding assertions open the need for continued research in liturgical theology and hymnological analysis within the Baptist tradition.
